The poem ' From The Start' by
Areej
Mohammad from Sudan is an expressive piece of writing which has a number of
poetic elements in its narrative. The poem seems to be roaming around the world
observing most of the occurring through the eyes of the poetess. It begins with
the confession of the poet when she feels that she is drowning mess. This mess
is of grief and sorrow for which she has a replacement of joy in her soul. She
prefers to travel through the ages outpacing time zone. The use of figurative
language adds more beauty to this narrative. Myriad objects such as moments
have been personified. The poem gives glimpses of variety of emotions which
flicker with the mood swing. Yet another feature of the writing is that the
poet has successfully travelled through her past from her stationed position of
her present moment.
Sometimes it gives a feeling that the piece must have been
basically written into the mother tongue of the poet later destined to be
translated into English.

I'm drowning in a mess
Your sadness and absence
arrange
joy
In the pores of my soul whenever you whisper
I'm here
travel the distance
time sleeps
In the calendar of life
My waist dances
runaway dream
From my daily details
on music
surreal self
series of dreams
And when I stumble
step on
my foot
The moment screams
The irony of timing
We were so close
from the start
we did not part
We saw all the lovers
We sat on the front row
At the parties of the East Planet
We wear goatskin
You smoked a lot
My body is full of tattoos
Everyone looks at us in amazement
Barefoot, semi-naked
And in literature and whispered
chant
(We want to go back in time)
We set stones on fire
We boarded the plane
to Paris
We got out of the temple walls
We arrived in Jerusalem
We have seen two wars
we were displaced
we got sick
surprised us
we are hungry
But we were together
Like the most beautiful story
how much we laughed
And we locked sadness in the pocket of the wind
We drew a rainbow
Between each cloud and another
spanning a bridge of butterflies
Help us never part
And here we are, centuries later
Wrinkles invaded us
Our feet have grown roots
And our hands have leaves
We have tired old age
Our days are falling
in the womb of memory
We give birth every time
young
are in love
arrange eternity
In the pores of love....
