The GREEN VALLEY of MILLS
of GRAGNANO - ITALY
In the
second half of the 13th century, to
increase the production of flour, the concession was given to build some mills
in a valley near the small village of Gragnano.
They were placed along a mule
track that connected Stabia to Amalfi.
They exploited the waters of the Vernotico river, fed by the Forma
springs. The proximity to the sea of the
port
of Stabia, facilitated the
arrival of the grain, which was then crammed into silos.
Over time they became the
main source
of sustenance to feed Naples
and all the surrounding towns.
They were abandoned in the 40s of the twentieth century, being covered by dense
vegetation.
Their particular and
fascinating architecture has recently attracted the attention of tourists and
industrial archeology scholars. Today,
this village, which has become a pretty town, is called in the world:
"" CITY of PASTA ""
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, The Green Valley of the Mills,,,,,,,,,,, ,,
on the Gragnano hill
I would like to hear again
the wheels rumble
on the hard dirt road
that from STABIA downstream,
up there they climbed
to deliver grain
in the valley of the mills,
up there on the hill
of GRAGNANO
Extraordinary place ,
full of water in abundance
and fertile soil enough,
where also rows
of oranges and lemons
full of sparkling fruits
they got drunk to listen,
of
the sweet melody
of clear streams.
Right there in front
tired carts stood
to deliver a precious cargo
which was to serve
to feed to hungry people.
